where will home educated children in Wales be able to sit exams in future

The Welsh Government wants GCSEs which are exclusive to Wales and the Welsh exam board WJEC is the only awarding body which is approved for these new qualifications.

At present, the state schools in Wales still offer exams from other boards as well as WJEC, but in future it is likely that non-WJEC exams will be increasingly marginalised in Welsh state schools and colleges.

This could have an unintended impact on home education.

Home educators can generally only take exams which are suitable for external candidates and these are not produced by WJEC.

Looking ahead, home educated young people in Wales may struggle to find somewhere to sit their exams as private candidates.
