Ofsted ILACS Schedule Inspection Children’s Services 2018 Onwards

Ofsted Inspection of Local Authority Children’s Services [ILACS] beginning in 2018 will consist of short inspections for local authorities judged good or outstanding and standard inspections for local authorities judged to require improvement.  These inspections will usually take place around three years after the previous inspection.

There will also be interim focused visits directed to an element of practice; plus monitoring visits for LAs judged inadequate.

If concerns arise about a local authority, Ofsted will decide whether to undertake an inspection or a focused visit.

Ofsted will decide how best to inspect each local authority based on the LA carrying out its own annual evaluation and there will be an annual engagement meeting between Ofsted and the LA (outside the inspection regime) where the LA’s self evaluation will be discussed.

(Ofsted will also consider its Local Authority Intelligence System [LAIS]).

Pathway 2 (the most common)

Local authorities judged to require improvement will receive a standard inspection (2 WEEKS). The standard inspection will usually take place about three years after the previous inspection. In between inspections, the local authority will receive up to two focused visits. A focused visit may be replaced by a Joint Targeted Area Inspection [JTAI].

Pathway 1

Local authorities judged to be good or outstanding will usually receive a short inspection (1 WEEK). The short inspection will usually take place about three years after the previous inspection. In between inspections, the local authority will usually receive one focused visit or a Joint Targeted Area Inspection [JTAI]. If Ofsted holds intelligence before the short inspection (including from the focused visit or JTAI or annual engagement meeting with data analysis) suggesting a significant deterioration it may decide to carry out a standard inspection, rather than a short inspection.
